Tragic Loss: Liverpool's Diogo Jota Passes Away at 28 in Car Accident
The football world is in mourning following the untimely death of Liverpool forward Diogo Jota, who tragically passed away in a car accident in Spain on Thursday. Jota, along with his brother Andre Silva, lost their lives in the incident, which occurred in the municipality of Cernadilla, located in the northwestern province of Zamora.
According to reports from the Civil Guard, the vehicle veered off the motorway and subsequently caught fire shortly after midnight. Initial investigations suggest that a tire blowout during an overtaking maneuver may have been the primary cause of the accident.
"Everything points to the blowout of a tyre while it (the vehicle) was overtaking," stated the Civil Guard. Angel Blanco, the central government's representative in Zamora, confirmed the grim details, saying, "The car was burned out, and they died inside."
Local media outlets have released images depicting the charred remains of Jota's Lamborghini, with scorched debris and burn marks clearly visible on the motorway.
The news of Jota's passing comes shortly after his marriage to Rute Cardoso on June 22nd. He had posted their wedding video on Instagram just hours before the tragic accident. The couple leaves behind three children.
The Circumstances Surrounding Jota's Travel
Reports from Portuguese and UK media suggest that Diogo Jota was en route to Santander to catch a ferry to England. This decision to travel by sea, rather than air, was reportedly due to medical advice following a recent lung operation.
Portuguese journalist Rui Laura indicated that Jota planned to continue his journey to Liverpool by road upon arriving in England. Victor Pinto, another journalist, added that Jota occasionally avoided flying due to recurring, though non-serious, pulmonary discomfort.
Football World Pays Tribute
Cristiano Ronaldo took to social media to express his sorrow over Jota's death, which occurred shortly after his marriage and their UEFA Nations League victory with Portugal. "We will all miss you," Ronaldo wrote.
Portuguese football federation president Pedro Proenca mourned the loss, stating, "We have lost two champions. The death of Diogo and Andre Silva are irreparable losses for Portuguese football, and we will do everything possible to honour their legacy every day."
Former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp shared his heartbreak on Instagram, and current manager Arne Slot remembered Jota as a unique individual and friend.
Liverpool fans gathered at Anfield stadium to create a memorial with shirts, scarves, flowers, balloons, photographs, and banners.
Portuguese Prime Minister Luis Montenegro acknowledged Jota's contribution to the country's honor.
Wolves, Jota's former club, released a statement saying, "We are heartbroken. Diogo was adored by our fans, loved by his teammates and cherished by everyone who worked with him... the memories he created will never be forgotten."
UEFA announced that all Women's Euro 2025 matches would observe moments of silence on Thursday and Friday. Portugal and Spain already held a silence before their match in Switzerland.
The funeral is scheduled for Saturday at a church in Gondomar, a Porto suburb, according to Portuguese news agency Lusa.
