During the second innings of the Edgbaston Test, Rishabh Pant faced some playful banter from England's Harry Brook, who attempted to disrupt the Indian batsman's rhythm.
As Pant built his innings, Brook engaged him with a cheeky question: "What's your fastest hundred?" The apparent aim was to unsettle the batsman and encourage a reckless approach.
Pant, however, responded with composure, stating his fastest Test century came in "maybe 80–90 minutes," referring to the measured tempo of his previous tons.
Brook, undeterred, then referenced his own swift century in the IPL. "The fastest hundred I’ve hit was in 55 balls—you could do that today," he said, seemingly trying to goad Pant into taking undue risks.
But Pant remained unfazed, replying with a calm smile. “It’s okay. I’m not too greedy for records. If it happens, it happens,” he said, effectively shutting down Brook's attempt to sledge him.
After a score of 25 in the first innings, Pant went on to deliver a crucial and entertaining 65 off just 58 balls, including eight fours and three sixes.
Pant's current record in 28 SENA (South Africa, England, New Zealand, Australia) Tests stands at 2,023 runs, achieved at an average of 41.28. He has recorded six centuries and six half-centuries in 52 innings, with a highest score of 159 not out.
In this series, Pant has been a standout performer, amassing 342 runs in four innings at an average of 85.00 and a strike rate of 81.81, including two centuries and a fifty. His highest score in the series is 134.
In addition to Pant's contribution, Gill scored a stroke-filled 65 off 58 balls, decorated with eight fours and three sixes. He and Pant achieved a partnership of 110 runs for the fourth wicket.
Gill had also followed up his substantial 269 in the first innings with another impressive knock of 161, scored off 162 balls with 13 fours and eight sixes.
Jadeja contributed an unbeaten 69 (from 118 balls, with five fours and one six) and added another 175 runs in a rapid partnership for the fifth wicket with the Indian skipper.
India, who began the fourth day's play at 64 for one, had previously lost KL Rahul (55) and Karun Nair (26) in the first session.
