Real Madrid secured a hard-fought 3-2 victory against Borussia Dortmund to advance to the semi-finals of the FIFA Club World Cup, where they will face Paris Saint-Germain. The match, held at MetLife Stadium near New York City in scorching heat, featured stellar performances from Gonzalo Garcia and Kylian Mbappe.
Kylian Mbappe secures the victory for Real Madrid with a stunning goal.
Gonzalo Garcia, the 21-year-old, opened the scoring in the 10th minute, netting his fourth goal of the tournament after a precise cross from Arda Guler. Fran Garcia extended the lead ten minutes later, concluding a fluid attacking move initiated by Trent Alexander-Arnold. Real Madrid dominated the initial stages, effectively suppressing Dortmund's rhythm and dictating the flow of the game.
Coach Xabi Alonso, while pleased with his team's performance, noted the frantic conclusion: "Everything was going under control… but the last 10 minutes were kind of crazy. Overall, a good 80 minutes and the last 10 minutes to improve."
Dortmund launched a dramatic late comeback attempt. Maximilian Beier scored in the 93rd minute, reducing the deficit to 2-1. However, Real Madrid responded emphatically. Mbappe, who entered as a second-half substitute, delivered a spectacular overhead kick, restoring the two-goal advantage.
Mbappe, who has been gradually regaining fitness, scored his first goal of the Club World Cup and his 44th of the season. "It will be a great challenge for us to face PSG, but let's take positives from today and move on for the next one," Alonso said, looking ahead to the semi-final clash.
The drama continued as Dean Huijsen was sent off for a foul on Serhou Guirassy, who then converted the resulting penalty, narrowing the scoreline again.
Despite the late pressure, Real Madrid managed to hold on for the win, much to the delight of the 76,611 spectators. The match was reminiscent of the 2024 Champions League final, but with even more dramatic twists and turns.
Dortmund coach Niko Kovac acknowledged Real Madrid's superiority, stating, “It is a deserved win for Real Madrid. We showed our qualities and it is not a failure if you go home after a defeat against them.”
