Djokovic Mounts Comeback Victory Over De Minaur, Secures 63rd Grand Slam Quarterfinal Berth at Wimbledon 2025
London - In a stunning display of resilience, Novak Djokovic overcame a shaky start to defeat Alex de Minaur and advance to his 16th Wimbledon quarterfinal, marking his 63rd Grand Slam quarterfinal appearance overall. After a dismal first set, the resilient Serb rallied to secure a 1-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 victory in three hours and 18 minutes.
The match began under challenging conditions at the All England Club. A cold wind swept across the grounds as spectators donned winter attire. Among those in attendance was eight-time champion Roger Federer.
De Minaur, who had withdrawn from last year's quarterfinal due to injury, came out strong. However, Djokovic found his rhythm, dictating play with his forehand and pushing the Australian onto the backfoot.
The second set saw early exchanges of breaks, with De Minaur winning a grueling nine-deuce game. Djokovic then regained control, holding serve and establishing a 3-1 lead. Supported by his fiancee Katie Boulter, De Minaur fought hard, but Djokovic seized the momentum in the third set to take a two-sets-to-one lead.
De Minaur surged to a 4-1 lead in the fourth set, raising the prospect of a five-set thriller. However, Djokovic had other plans. He broke back in the seventh game, leveled the score at 4-4, and closed out the match.
Dismissing concerns about stomach issues, Djokovic humorously acknowledged Federer's presence in the stands. "It’s probably the first time he has watched me and I’ve won the match. The last couple I lost, it’s good to break the curse," he said.
In another fourth-round match, Italian Flavio Cobolli defeated Marin Cilic to reach his first Wimbledon quarterfinal. Cobolli is now set to face Djokovic for the second time in his career.
Belinda Bencic also advanced to the quarterfinal, defeating Ekaterina Alexandrova.
