Van der Dussen to Captain South Africa in T20I Tri-Series
Rassie van der Dussen is set to lead a revamped South African squad in the upcoming T20I tri-series held in Harare, featuring New Zealand and Zimbabwe. With regular captain Aiden Markram rested alongside other senior players as part of workload management, Van der Dussen steps up to captain the side.
The squad includes fresh talent, with Lhuan-dre Pretorius, the top scorer in this year's SA20, receiving his first national call-up. Corbin Bosch, already experienced in ODIs and Tests, will aim to make his mark in T20Is. Rubin Hermann, another standout performer from the SA20, and Senuran Muthusamy, who has represented South Africa in other formats, complete the list of uncapped players selected for this series.
South Africa's pace attack is strengthened by the return of Nandre Burger and Gerald Coetzee. Both bowlers have recovered from long-term injuries and are currently participating in the MLC. Additionally, Dewald Brevis is set to make his comeback after nearly two years away from the national side.
This tri-series marks Shukri Conrad's inaugural T20I assignment as the all-format coach. The series begins on July 14 with South Africa facing Zimbabwe. The final is scheduled for July 26.
"This T20I tri-series signals the commencement of our preparations for the upcoming T20 World Cup next year," Conrad stated. "With several senior players being rested to manage their workload, this presents an opportunity for new players to demonstrate their abilities and vie for selection in the World Cup squad."
Conrad further added, "Lhuan-dre and Rubin have earned their places through exceptional domestic performances in the SA20, and we are eager to observe how they adapt to the challenges of international cricket. We recognize Corbin's potential at this level and are keen to see how his Test and ODI skills translate into the T20I format."
