Elon Musk's AI venture, xAI, is set to release the source code for its Grok chatbot this week, marking a significant move towards accessible AI technology. This decision comes after Musk's repeated criticism of OpenAI for allegedly straying from its original mission of developing AI for the benefit of humanity, instead of prioritizing profit.
"This week, @xAI will open source Grok," Musk announced via a post on X (formerly Twitter).
Open-sourcing a chatbot like Grok means making its source code publicly available and redistributable. This allows developers and researchers to freely access, modify, and distribute the software. The benefits of open-source software include increased transparency, community-driven development, and the potential for faster problem-solving through diverse contributions.
One user suggested that OpenAI should follow suit and open source their own AI models if they want to be considered "open". To that, Musk replied, "OpenAI is a lie."
Musk has previously expressed his support for open-source AI during an interview with Lex Fridman. "I am generally in favour of open sourcing, like biassed towards open sourcing," he stated in November of last year.
This announcement follows the release of Grok by xAI, which reportedly took only four months to develop. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman responded to this news with a sarcastic post about how simple it was to build an AI model with a single prompt on GPT Builder.
"GPTs can save a lot of effort," Altman said.
Musk, clearly not amused, retorted that "GPT-4 is about as funny as a screendoor on a submarine."
