Sunil Gavaskar, the iconic Indian cricketer, has publicly condemned the increasing circulation of fake quotes attributed to him on various sports websites and social media platforms.
In a video message shared on his official Instagram account, Gavaskar directly addressed the issue, denouncing the misrepresentation of comments he never made. He urged fans and followers to exercise caution and critical thinking when encountering such statements.
"Over the last few months, it has come to my notice that a lot of sports websites and individual accounts have been attributing comments and quotes to me that I've never made," Gavaskar stated in the video. He emphasized the importance of verifying information, urging everyone to "verify, fact-check, and not to believe everything that they read, particularly coming from some of these individual accounts and sports websites."
Currently in England as a commentator for the ongoing Test series between India and England, Gavaskar expressed his concern over the proliferation of these fabricated remarks. While he refrained from singling out specific platforms, his unease with the trend was evident.
The legendary cricketer's statement follows a series of alleged quotes attributed to him during India's first Test loss at Headingley. These particularly surfaced after Rishabh Pant’s twin centuries and Jasprit Bumrah’s impressive bowling performance. Gavaskar noted that his actual commentary during the match, which included a lighthearted reversal of his well-known Melbourne comment about Pant, was distorted by numerous platforms seeking engagement.
