Kavya Maran, CEO and co-owner of Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), has opened up about her widely circulated reactions during Indian Premier League (IPL) matches that have turned her into an internet sensation. In a recent interview, Maran addressed the attention, explaining that her visible emotions are a direct result of her deep involvement and passion for the team's performance. She also humorously noted the cameraman's uncanny ability to capture her reactions, regardless of her location in the stadium.
Maran, daughter of Sun Group chairman Kalanithi Maran, first caught the public eye during the 2023 IPL auction, where she spearheaded SRH's strategic player acquisitions. Since then, her presence at SRH games has become a focal point, with her reactions to the on-field action quickly going viral across social media platforms.
"Those are my raw emotions that you're seeing," Maran explained, "because my job has brought me to the point that I have to put myself out there... But even when I go to Ahmedabad or Chennai... the cameraman manages to find me. So, I understand how it becomes memes."
She further emphasized her personal connection to the team: "When it comes to Sunrisers, I genuinely wear my heart on my sleeve. I think when you put your heart and soul into something, you naturally tend to get very personally attached to its successes and failures."
Under Maran's stewardship, SRH has experienced a rollercoaster of fortunes in the IPL.
SRH's crowning achievement remains their IPL championship victory in 2016. The franchise's journey under Maran's leadership has been characterized by both triumphs and setbacks.
Maran's involvement extends beyond the IPL, as she also oversees the Sunrisers Eastern Cape in South Africa's SA20 league. This venture has seen greater success, with the team clinching the title in both the inaugural 2023 and 2024 seasons under the captaincy of Aiden Markram.
