Archer's Test Comeback: A Calculated Risk for England?
Former England captain Nasser Hussain has shared his thoughts on Jofra Archer's inclusion in the England Test squad, labeling it a "gamble worth taking," while also urging caution regarding his immediate entry into the playing XI for the second Test against India at Edgbaston.
Jofra Archer makes his return to the England Test squad.
Archer, whose last Test appearance was in February 2021, has been named in the squad for the second Test commencing on July 2nd. The 30-year-old has struggled with recurring elbow and back injuries in recent years, recently returning to red-ball cricket for Sussex, where he bowled 18 overs against Durham, securing figures of 1/32.
Hussain, in his analysis on Sky Sports, recognized the emotional and physical challenges of Archer's return. He noted, "Firstly, it's positive news for both Archer and England, considering the immense difficulties Jofra has faced with injuries, rehabilitation, pain, and the mental strain of repeated setbacks. It's fantastic to see him back in the squad, especially after a four-year absence from Test cricket."
However, the former captain advised against immediately including Archer in the XI for the Edgbaston Test. "Introducing him this week might be too risky. While his performance might exceed expectations – and I'm not privy to Jofra Archer's physical condition – there's a possibility the team management might consider playing him this week. However, the challenge then becomes: who makes way for him?"
Despite these reservations, Hussain expressed optimism about the long-term impact of Archer's return. "I believe it's a calculated risk worth taking; however, I'm uncertain if this week is the right time. I would consider it a week later at Lord's."
England currently leads the five-match series 1-0 following their five-wicket victory at Leeds. The squad remains unchanged for Edgbaston.
