Gautam Gambhir, the head coach, has voiced his support for the Indian lower order despite their recent batting collapses in the Headingley Test against England. This backing comes after India suffered a painful defeat, failing to defend a target of 371 runs on the final day.
India's campaign ultimately fell short as England completed the chase with relative ease. The loss marked India's seventh in their last nine Tests, a particularly disappointing one considering their dominance for significant periods of the match.
India amassed a total of 835 runs, featuring five centuries, including one in each innings from Rishabh Pant, yet still found themselves on the losing side. The turning point? Two critical batting collapses.
The first collapse squandered an opportunity to put England under immense pressure after winning the toss. It allowed England to get within six runs of India's 471. The second collapse left India with a manageable target to defend which England successfully chased.
Shubman Gill, who began his captaincy with a century, revealed the team was aiming for a target "around 435." Gambhir, however, suggested the game's direction shifted much earlier. "If we could've got to 570, 580 in the first innings, we could've dominated from there," he stated.
Despite the lower order's struggles, Gambhir defended their efforts. Shardul Thakur and Prasidh Krishna were dismissed playing questionable shots.
"Look, first of all, it's not that they weren't applying themselves. Sometimes people fail. And that's okay," Gambhir explained. "It's not like they're not working hard in the nets... Even proper batters fail. Hopefully they'll learn, and hopefully, we'll get better performances from our tail."
He also emphasized that the collapses weren't the sole reason for the defeat.
Another significant factor in India's loss was their poor catching. They dropped seven catches throughout the match, with Yashasvi Jaiswal being a major culprit. Ben Duckett, who was dropped at 97, went on to score a crucial 149. Gill acknowledged the dropped chances.
"Yes, that was something that we spoke about," Gill admitted. "Chances don't come easy, especially on wickets like these, and we dropped quite a few catches... hopefully, in the next matches, we'll be able to improve on those aspects."
Gambhir dismissed the "young team" excuse. "Every defeat is bad... A young team is not an excuse. We represent 140 crore proud Indians... We will turn up every Test match thinking that we can win the test match and win the series."
Gambhir confirmed that Jasprit Bumrah would only play two more Test matches. This decision was made to manage his workload. The specific matches Bumrah will participate in are yet to be decided.
"[Even without Bumrah] we absolutely have the bowling attack [to compete]. We believe in them." Gambhir concluded.
